A coil moves heat between air and refrigerant, and it does that through thin aluminium fins packed a few millimetres apart. Dust is an insulator. A film across those fins means less heat moves on each pass, so the air coming out of your vents is not as cold, so the room takes longer to reach the temperature on the thermostat. The compressor stays on for all of that extra time. Same setting, same comfort, more running hours. That is the part of your DEWA bill nobody can see.
Your system has two coils and they do opposite jobs. The evaporator sits inside the indoor unit and gets cold: room air passes over it, gives up its heat, and comes back cooler and drier. The condenser sits outside and gets hot: it dumps that collected heat into the Dubai air. Both have to be clean for the cycle to work as designed, which is why AED 299 covers both rather than one.

Dust on a coil is not sitting loose. Condensation has been running through it for months, so the deposit has bound to the aluminium and packed the gaps between fins. Pressure alone drives that further in and bends the fins on the way. The chemical goes on first to break the bond, then the pressure carries it out the way it came.
Fins are thin enough to fold under a jet held at the wrong angle, and a folded fin blocks airflow permanently. Getting that right is most of the skill in this job, and it is the main reason a coil is worth AED 299 to have done properly rather than attacked with a garden hose.

A lot of coil cleaning in Dubai is a can of foam sprayed through the grille onto panels that never come off. That reaches the front face of the fins and nothing behind it. Half a job, and the half that matters least.
For the price that I paid, they sent three personnel to clean our vents and AC duct. They also have a camera in their vacuum and a monitor so that you can see what they are cleaning. Consider me a repeat customer - I plan to have my vents and AC ducts cleaned every 3 to 6 months to ensure my newborn baby breathes fresh air here in Dubai.

Of the individual AC cleaning services, this is the one with the clearest link to running cost. Usually because too little air is moving across the evaporator coil. Room air is what keeps the coil surface above freezing while it works; restrict that airflow with a blocked filter or a dust-blanketed coil and the surface drops below zero, so the moisture condensing on it turns to ice instead of running off into the drain tray. The ice then blocks the airflow further. Ice can also mean low refrigerant, which is a repair rather than a clean - we will tell you which we are looking at.
Every three to six months for most Dubai homes, and towards the shorter end if you run the AC hard, live near the coast, or have pets. The outdoor condenser is the one people forget: it sits in open air collecting sand and it is the first thing a shamal loads up.
